What does pH Balance mean?

pH (which is an abbreviation for power of hydrogen) is a measuring unit of acidity and alkalinity of a solution. It is measured numerically using a scale of 0-14, with 0 representing the greatest amount of acidity within a solution, 7 representing a neutral pH, and 14 the greatest amount of alkalinity within a solution. The urine, blood, saliva, digestive juices and the fluids inside and outside the body’s cells each have an optimum pH level.

Just as our body temperature must be maintained at 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, our blood is ideally maintained at 7.365 pH. A declining (acidic) blood pH creates great risk to our health, so our body goes to great measures to prevent this. The body works to keep opposites in balance including the delicate balance between acids and bases within the internal fluids. The entire metabolic process depends on an alkaline environment. Dr. Robert Young states, “Chronic overacidity corrodes body tissue, and if left unchecked will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain.”

All foods digested in our bodies metabolize (or burn) down to an ash residue.
This ash residue can be neutral, acidic, or alkaline, depending mostly on the mineral content of the original food. For example, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, zinc, silver, copper, and iron form basic ash; sulphur, phosphorus, chlorine, and iodine leave acid ash.

We can categorize which foods leave which kind of ash. In general, animal foods – meat, eggs, dairy – processed and refined foods, yeast products, fermented foods, grains, artificial sweeteners, and sugars are acidifying, as are alcohol, coffee, chocolate, black tea, and sodas.

Vegetables and many fruits on the other hand are alkalizing. Grains are generally acidifying, though a few (millet, buckwheat, and spelt) are only very mildly so. Raw foods are more alkalizing, while cooked food is more acidifying.

To maintain a balanced pH in your blood and tissues, it is ideal to consume 70 percent alkaline foods. The good news is hydrating throughout the day with a vegetable based green drink, and or with alkaline water, greatly  helps to maintain or restore alkalinity. The more alkaline your diet, the more rapid your health improvement will be.

Every cell in the body needs phytonutrients and chlorophyll derived from green plants. Plant foods are cleansing and alkalizing to the body (filled with antioxidants) while processed and refined foods can increase unhealthy levels of acidity, free radicals, and toxins. We are sick and tired as a culture largely due to consuming a diet primarily comprised of acid-forming foods, (i.e., sugar, meat, dairy, yeast, breads, etc.) rather than green plant foods.
While reading information on alkalizing, please keep in mind the nutritional focus of Holistic Counseling is to help you discover an authentic and nurturing way of eating that works for and with your body and lifestyle—the goal is to learn to tune into and listen to your body. We offer guidance to help you follow both inner and outer wisdom. Outer wisdom includes nutritional information about whole foods and alkalizing, and inner wisdom involves listening to your body’s innate wisdom and guidance. The goal is to learn to listen to your body and follow its promptings. Our five and thirty-day detox programs are designed to bring your body to more balanced and alkaline state, so your body will naturally crave what it nutritionally needs.
